An Artificial Intelligence research organization, which goes by the name OpenAI, is the very organization behind the world’s first ever Dota 2 team powered completely by artificial intelligence. Recently, the AI-powered Dota 2 team managed to prove its worth by defeating the champions of the game “OG”, and that too twice.

While other teams are facing each other in various Dota 2 tournaments around the world, the top Dota 2 team OG decided to try out something new. They were invited by OpenAI who gave them a chance to stand against an AI-powered Dota 2 team, which is basically designed to learn how to play the game on its own.

The Match Between OpenAI Five and Dota 2

At the start, OG must’ve thought that they will win this battle as they are the world champions and defeating some bots wouldn’t sound something difficult to them. However, after the matches ended, it was clearly revealed that the AI team is far more superior than the human team. Here is how it all went down.

The matches were basically played on the latest patch in Captain Draft’s game mode and Summons along with illusions were disabled in the game. In addition to this, Rapiers, Scanning, and Bottles were also not allowed during the matches. This was done because the AI team was yet to properly learn what these were. In any case, the match was started and OpenAI Five surely gave OG a hard time. Within 30 minutes, by playing aggressively and using proper techniques, the AI-powered team managed to defeat the Human team.

The second match then began and OG was fully dedicated to defeating the AI-powered team this time. However, they were surely surprised after they were defeated within only 20 minutes. This basically proved that the AI team learned the game much faster than its makers had expected.

Although it was the first ever match between a human team and an AI-powered team, it was still something which was only meant to see how AI can perform in the future. The OpenAI Five did make some mistakes, but they also learned some new techniques during the matches. On the other hand, OG was more focused on trying to see the flaws and weaknesses of the AI team, rather than just trying to win the match.

OpenAI’s Dota 2 Team Is Improving

For those who don’t know, OpenAI first placed its steps in the world of Dota 2 back in 2017. During that time, they decided to put their bots up against some professional Dota 2 players, through which they discovered that their AI-powered bots still have some flaws in them. However, the recent performance of their team against OG has showcased that their bots are improving and that they are continuously learning new things. Even the Co-founder of OpenAI claimed that they coded the team to how to learn, instead of coding it how to play.
