Both LoL and Dota 2 are multiplayer games, each with 2 teams of 5 players who battle it out on a map. Both games have the same goal, to destroy the oppositions base. But the two games are also very different, there is a strong argument that Dota 2 isn’t even a multiplayer online battle arena.
Let’s Dota Gang bring you all take a look at the 4 main differences between these online games.
Playable Character Names
The playable characters in League of Legends are called Champions and in Dota 2 they are called heroes. If you play both games, it is important to remember this difference. LoL has a limited number of Champions available, you do have the option to buy more though. Dota 2 makes all the Heroes available right from the get-go. In LoL because you have limited Champions, you learn how to specialize your main character, this means you can build a very powerful character which is great but only having one character removes a lot of flexibility. Dota 2 allows you access to the entire pool of character which can be overwhelming but playing around with different characters can also be fun.
Roles and builds
League dictates what teams must roll out with. You have no flexibility with this, each rolls out with a melee heavy hitter, a spell-casting Champion, a Champion designated to carry the team late-game, a Jungle Champion. It is not even worth trying to change this. Dota 2 has none of this. Heroes can decide how they want to roll out. They can decide between 2 supports, 3 melee Heroes or 4 sell-casters.
Unlike League of Legends, Dota 2 does not have Runes, Masteries, and Summoner Spells. Another difference is that in Dota 2 you can hit and kill your allies while in LoL there is no such thing. When playing League, you can hide behind bushes to set up ambushes but in Dota 2 the environment has a bigger role to play. You can chop down trees and gain advantage when attacking from higher ground. Another notable difference is that Champions turn around instantly when prompted in League, but Heroes have a turnaround animation that can make them a little more sluggish. In Dota 2 you can kill ally Heroes who have negative effects that are draining their HP, and this can make Dota 2 harder to play.
League of Legends is more popular and offers players more frequent tournaments that Dota 2 tournaments, but the community can be toxic and unwelcoming especially if you are new and make mistakes. LoL is an easier game to start playing thanks to this it is more accessible for those who are new to the MOBA world. The Dota 2 gameplay can be more difficult which has resulted in a more forgiving community.
